A 140 x 70cm cot bed mattress is commonly used with larger convertible cot beds designed to provide a sleeping space from infancy and, depending on the individual product, into the toddler years.
One of the main differences between a cot and a cot bed is that many cot beds can later be converted by removing or repositioning the sides and ends to create a toddler bed. In these designs, the same 140 x 70cm mattress can often continue to be used after conversion.
However, not every cot bed uses a 140 x 70cm mattress. Some smaller cot beds use a 120 x 60cm mattress, which is why you should always follow the mattress dimensions specified by the furniture manufacturer.
Our 140 x 70cm cot bed mattress collection includes different constructions and comfort options, allowing you to choose the mattress best suited to your cot bed and preferences.
What Types of 140 x 70cm Cot Bed Mattress Are Available?
Cot bed mattresses can use several different types of construction.
Fibre Cot Bed Mattresses
Fibre mattresses provide a firm and supportive sleeping surface and can be a practical choice for parents looking for an affordable 140 x 70cm cot bed mattress.
Sprung Cot Bed Mattresses
Sprung cot bed mattresses contain an internal spring system designed to provide support across the sleeping surface.
A sprung construction can be particularly appealing when looking for a mattress that may remain in use as a cot bed converts through different stages.
Pocket Sprung Cot Bed Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses contain individual springs enclosed within separate fabric pockets, allowing each spring to respond independently.
They're generally positioned as a more premium mattress option, combining individual spring support with a firm sleeping surface designed for babies and young children.
Premium Core Cot Bed Mattresses
Premium cot bed mattresses may use more advanced supportive materials and construction methods to provide enhanced comfort, breathability and durability.
Always compare the individual mattress specifications, as materials, covers, construction and features vary between models.
Is 140 x 70cm a Standard Cot Bed Mattress Size?
140 x 70cm is one of the most common cot bed mattress sizes in the UK, but it isn't a universal size.
Many larger convertible cot beds require a 140 x 70cm mattress, while some more compact cot beds use a 120 x 60cm mattress.
The terms cot and cot bed therefore don't tell you the mattress size by themselves.
Always check the dimensions stated by the cot bed manufacturer before buying a mattress.
If you're unsure about the distinction, our Cot vs Cot Bed: What's the Difference? guide explains the differences between cots, cot beds and their mattress sizes.
What's the Difference Between a 120 x 60cm and 140 x 70cm Mattress?
The difference is simply their physical dimensions.
A 140 x 70cm mattress is 20cm longer and 10cm wider than a 120 x 60cm mattress, providing a larger sleeping surface.
120 x 60cm mattresses are commonly used with traditional baby cots and some compact cot beds, while 140 x 70cm mattresses are frequently used with larger convertible cot beds.
Neither mattress size is interchangeable.
If your furniture requires a 140 x 70cm mattress, you shouldn't substitute a smaller 120 x 60cm mattress simply because it fits inside the frame.
Can a 140 x 70cm Cot Bed Mattress Be Used for a Toddler Bed?
Yes, when the toddler bed or converted cot bed is specifically designed for a 140 x 70cm mattress.
This is one of the advantages of many convertible cot beds. The mattress purchased for the cot stage can potentially continue to be used when the furniture is converted into its toddler-bed configuration.
There are also standalone toddler beds designed specifically around a 140 x 70cm mattress.
However, toddler bed dimensions vary considerably, so never assume that every toddler bed requires this size.
How Should a 140 x 70cm Cot Bed Mattress Fit?
A baby mattress should provide a firm, flat sleeping surface and fit the cot bed correctly.
The mattress should sit flat within the sleeping area without significant gaps around the edges.
Don't use a mattress that's substantially smaller than the dimensions specified for the cot bed or try to force an oversized mattress into the frame.
Always follow the mattress size and maximum permitted mattress depth specified by the cot bed manufacturer.
Choosing Between Fibre, Sprung and Pocket Sprung Cot Bed Mattresses
Price alone shouldn't determine which cot bed mattress you choose.
Consider:
- Mattress construction
- Firmness and support
- Breathability
- Removable or washable covers
- Mattress depth
- Materials
- Manufacturer compatibility
- Applicable safety standards
Because a 140 x 70cm mattress may potentially remain in use as a convertible cot bed progresses into its toddler-bed configuration, you may also want to consider the construction and durability of the mattress when comparing options.
The starting point, however, should always be choosing the correct mattress size specified for your cot bed.
