Choosing a nursing chair is about finding somewhere you will enjoy sitting every day. From feeding your newborn to sharing books with a growing child, the Obaby Madison collection offers upholstered seating that can remain part of your home beyond the nursery years.
The main decisions are straightforward: choose between a standard and electric recliner, then select your preferred upholstery and colour. Consider where the chair will go and how much space it needs to move, as well as how it looks alongside your furniture.
Swivel, Glide and Recline
The Madison combines three distinct functions. Swivelling turns the seat, gliding creates a gentle backwards-and-forwards movement, and reclining changes the seating angle.
These functions offer different ways to sit comfortably, whether you prefer an upright position for feeding or a reclined position when relaxing on your own. Follow the instructions for your chosen model, including any restrictions on movement while reclined.
If you have been searching for a nursing rocking chair, note that the Madison uses a gliding mechanism rather than traditional curved rocking runners.
Standard or Electric Madison Recliner?
The standard Madison recliner offers manually operated reclining alongside its swivel and gliding functions. It is an option for parents who prefer a chair without powered recline controls.
The electric Madison adds motorised recline adjustment. Electric versions also offer USB and USB-C charging, providing a convenient place to connect a compatible device while seated.
When comparing models, start with how you would prefer to adjust the chair. For an electric version, plan its position near a suitable power socket and follow the instructions for routing the cable clear of moving parts.
Bouclé-Style, Teddy and Chenille Finishes
Upholstery makes a noticeable difference to the appearance of your feeding corner. The Madison collection includes bouclé-style, teddy and chenille finishes, alongside options such as Oatmeal and Pebble.
For a light, neutral room, explore Bouclé Style, Chenille Marshmallow or Teddy Ivory where available. Chenille Mushroom and Teddy Truffle offer warmer tones, while Chenille Marmalade and Teddy Olive introduce more colour.
Fabric and colour choices vary between standard and electric models. Check the individual listing and photographs to confirm the combination you are ordering.
Choosing a Comfortable Feeding Position
When choosing a nursing chair for breastfeeding or bottle feeding, think about how the seat fits the adults who will use it. Seat depth, armrest height and back support all affect how comfortable a chair feels.
Consider whether you can sit back comfortably, whether your arms have enough room and whether there is space for any feeding pillow you normally use. If two adults of different heights will share the chair, take both into account.
Overall dimensions help you plan the room, but they do not tell you everything about the seating position. Ask for any additional measurements you need before ordering.
Allowing Space for Your Madison Chair
Measure the space where the chair will stand, then allow additional clearance for swivelling, gliding and reclining. The upright footprint alone does not represent the space needed during use.
Keep nearby furniture outside the chair’s movement area and leave a clear route into and out of the seat. Think about cupboard doors, drawers and where you might place a small table for a drink or muslin.
Check the delivery route too, including doorways, stairs and tight corners. Review the product’s delivery and assembly information before deciding where to position it.
Looking After the Upholstery
Check the care instructions for your chosen Madison finish. Different fabrics can require different cleaning methods, and upholstered cushions should not be assumed to have removable or machine-washable covers.
Follow the manufacturer’s guidance for spills and routine cleaning. Choosing a finish you enjoy looking at, alongside care requirements that suit your household, will help the chair work well in everyday family life.
